Welcome to our Matthias Family photo page!

Our family is serving as missionaries with SEND International (http://www.send.org). We recently spent three years in Kyiv, Ukraine learning the Russian language and preparing for ministry in Russia. We are now living in Highland, IN, serving the church in America and raising prayer and financial support in order to relocate to Tambov, Russia.

OUR STORY
After meeting at Trinity College in Deerfield, IL, and completing their undergraduate studies, Mark and Monica were married in 1993 and lived in the Chicago suburbs. For several years, Monica taught elementary school and Mark worked with emotionally disturbed children. Then, Mark attended seminary, earning a Masters Degree in counseling from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in 1997. We began a family in 1999 when our daughter, Corrie Mae was born and it grew larger when our son, Caleb was born in 2001. During this time, Mark served the community through a local homeless program and later by counseling those facing difficult financial challenges. Also, in addition to raising a family, Monica tutored grade-school children and later helped teen-mothers through our home church.

Then in 2002, God began to lead us in a new direction. He called us to serve Christ through full-time ministry and to follow his command to make disciples of all peoples (Matt 28:19-20). He led us to begin the process of becoming overseas missionaries. We began learning about missions by serving on the missions committee of our home church, and later by talking with the mission agency, SEND International (http://www.send.org). As we learned more about SEND, and realized what an effective organization they are and how they cared for their missionaries, we decided to join them as career missionaries in 2004. After developing prayer and financial partnerships with people and churches, we arrived in Kiev, Ukraine to begin our Russian language study in 2005 and completed the program last year.

WHAT ARE WE DOING NOW?
Although we anxiously anticipated moving to Russia last November, a dramatic change in the Russian visa law prevented it. Then earlier this year, our return to America, previously scheduled for next year, was moved up when it was discovered that Mark’s disabled sister’s cancer had returned. Our family returned to the States in May to love and support her as she completes her chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

As a result of God’s direction in these unexpected ways, we are now living in the Chicago area, and following His plan to serve the body of Christ through our local church). We have been so excited to see how God provided us with new ways to serve Him through various ministries there, including discipleship, counseling and children’s ministries.

Our primary goal over the next year will be to raise the additional prayer and financial support needed by helping the church here in America better understand God’s plan for Christ to be known throughout the world. Through presentations at worship services and Sunday school classes and also through conversations with individuals, we explain God’s call to worldwide missions and how they can join with us in this ministry through prayer and financial giving. If you or your church would like to learn more about how God is at work around the world or how we can join together to serve Christ overseas, please contact us.

WHERE ARE WE GOING?
We will be moving to the city of Tambov in Western Russia, south of Moscow. (To see a map, click here, http://matthiasfamily.smugmug.com/gallery/102281_rdEhT#217637978_MFpvT). There we will join our growing team of Russians, Ukrainians and Americans and assist the Russian believers in their church-planting work. Mark expects to serve through preaching, counseling, discipleship and compassion ministries, while Monica is looking forward to using her gifts to encourage and mentor women in their roles as wives and mothers.

February '09 : February was a very busy month for visiting churches and sharing about missions and Russia! We presented 9 times to various groups in 3 different churches about God's call to missions, the spiritual needs in Russia and our plans for ministry next year. Whew! Here in the gallery, we'll just give you an overview of a few of them! Sadly, we also mourned the death of 16 year old Andrew Burkett, a SEND missionary who unexpectedly died in Ukraine. The Burkett family served in a city in Western Ukraine, but we grew to love them as we met them through ministry and different area conferences. Mark travelled to Michigan to visit and comfort them following their return to the states. As we so often do, we also enjoyed some family moments and have photos to share with you. Enjoy!

November '08 : This was not a very busy month for us, as Monica continued to recover from her surgery last month. One big piece of news was that Mark's sister Laura completed her radiation treatments. Pray that God would continue to keep her healthy and that the cancer would not return. Mark was involved in a few ministy-related activites, and of course, there was the Thanksgiving holiday. So enjoy a seeing a small glimpse of our family during November.

October '08 : During this month, in addition to Laura's ongoing radiation treatments and our volunteering at Suburban Bible Church, our family was also faced with an unexpected challenge. Doctors discovered a very large fibroid on Monica's uterus which required surgery. In spite of it all though we also enjoyed some great family times together. We returned to our Autumn tradition of visiting an apple orchard (when we are in America) and also celebrated Caleb's 7th birthday.

June '08 : After getting settled into our new home in Indiana last month, we continued to re-adjust to American culture by doing a variety of things typically American, such as visiting the zoo, children's museum and the American Girl Place, celebrating Father's Day and buying treats from the ice cream truck. On the other hand, some things were much more unique like shaving off someone's hair and enjoying sparklers (in June!).

December '07 : Our family was blessed to have an opportunity to return to the States in December. Our main purpose was one which had been planned since we left for Ukraine three years ago, namely Mark's grandmother's 100th birthday!!! We promised that when she turned 100 years old, we would be there to celebrate with her. And we are so glad she did!! Then, since we were already in America, we were happy to stay and enjoy the Christmas season and celebrate Christ's birth with family. So we spent some time traveling to South Carolina, Alabama, and of course, Illinois and Wisconsin. Merry Christmas to all and a Happy New Year!!!
